THE USUAL: ISSUE #2

With Summer fading quickly here on the East coast, I was happy to receive a little dose of Summer love with the Second issue of The Usual, beautifully produced by my friend Yasha and her partner Emily. The Usual is a seasonal "love letter to Montauk", focusing on the people and places that make the easternmost tip of Long Island so special. Issue #2 includes features on Rogan and Matterhorn, a photo essay by Rachel Chandler, and interviews with Savannah Buffet, Tom Curren, and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Contributors include photographer Will Adler, Seth Herzog, and Ken Miller.
The Usual is available in New York at Cafe Colette, Saturday's Surf, Tommy Guns Salon, Hotel Del Mano, The Smile, Fat Radish, Rogan, and Indochine; in Montauk at Ruschmeyer's, the Surf Lodge.

JUVENTUS FC v. NOTTS COUNTY

Juventus FC open their new stadium this evening against League One side Notts County. At first it seems an odd choice for the Old Lady to christen their new home against English opposition. However these two clubs share a history dating back to 1903. Read the full story here

NEVILLE GABIE "PLAYING AWAY" PROJECT

Neville Gabie
Playing Away
Interview with Tate London
Artist Statement:
Originally motivated by the sculptural qualities of some of the structures used as goalposts and the spaces where the game is played, this project has developed into an objective study of diverse cultural landscapes with a common obsession, football. Photographing the first of these goalposts I recognized something of what I was striving to achieve as an artist. Formally they explore sculptural concerns - the need to occupy a physical space, to stand up against the forces of gravity and the desire to be inventive with the use and assembly of all sorts of materials. Pictorially they are literally a window into vastly different contexts, intimately reflecting their immediate environment by using whatever material is readily available, to create these frames. And where space is limited, street corners or garage doors become substitute, with paint replacing construction as a means of marking out a territory. Common to all are the endless possibilities of reinvention within the constraints of creating an aperture marked by two verticals and one horizontal. It is "Dirty Minimalism" where the rules of what is or is not a goalpost are stretched to the very limits by the desire to play.

FIGHT THE FLOP CAMPAIGN
Fight the Flop "aims to change the mind-set surrounding the game of soccer (or futbol); tearing down a culture where inexcusable and false intentions dictate game results and leaving in its place a world where dignity and reverence for the game are upheld on the soccer pitch. We issue this call to arms to everyone and anyone interested in preserving the sanctity of mankind's most beloved game. Join the fight" via KCKRS

The free to view five-day mixed-format exhibition presented by Nike and Arena Homme+ marks the 125th anniversary of London's most successful football club, Arsenal. For 125 years both on and off the pitch the club has embodied style and class, as well as leading innovation within the modern game.
Arena Homme+, the curators of the exhibition, commissioned the photographic collective DoBeDo to create the main gallery content. DoBeDo uniquely combines the talents of established British photographers and the best of London new-school, adding a fresh and vibrant energy to the art scene.
The collective captured the passion of Arsenal through photographic explorations of the fans, the players, Emirates Stadium and Arsenal's training ground, London Colney. Led by founding member Tyrone Le Bon, DoBeDo took charge of different focal points and shot each moment in their own distinct style to tell a powerful story through stunning and captivating imagery.
Ridley Scott Associates (RSA), a global film production company founded in London by brothers Ridley Scott and Tony Scott, has also created a short documentary that provides a deeply personal insight into the mindset of the Arsenal fans, to be showcased at the exhibition."
